A laptop that takes four minutes to be usable after switching on is usually not worn out. It is usually one of four specific problems, and three of them are cheap to fix.
Work out what is actually slow
The symptoms point at different causes.
Slow to start, slow to open anything, disk light constantly on. Almost certainly a mechanical hard disk. The most common cause by a wide margin.
Fine until several things are open, then everything crawls. Not enough memory.
Fast at first, slows down after twenty minutes, fans loud. Overheating. The machine is deliberately slowing itself to avoid damage.
Slow only on the internet. Not the laptop — see broadband speed troubleshooting.
Slow only in one program. That program, not the machine.
The free fixes, first
Startup programs
Over years, every installed program adds itself to the startup list. Twenty programs launching at once is why the machine takes minutes to settle.
Open Task Manager, look at the Startup tab, and disable everything that is not essential. Nothing breaks — the programs still run when you open them.
This alone frequently transforms a machine, and it costs nothing.
Disk space
A drive close to full slows down considerably. Aim to keep at least fifteen per cent free.
The usual culprits are downloads, old installers, and years of photographs that also exist in the cloud.
Vents and dust
Laptops draw air through small vents that fill with dust and fibres. A machine that runs hot slows itself down to protect its components.
Compressed air through the vents, with the machine off, takes five minutes. Do not use a vacuum cleaner. And avoid using it on a bed or a sofa, which blocks the intake entirely.
Machines older than four or five years often benefit from a proper internal clean and new thermal paste, which is a workshop job and inexpensive.
The two upgrades worth doing
A solid state drive
The single most effective upgrade available for any older machine.
Replacing a mechanical hard disk with a solid state drive typically makes a machine feel newer than a new machine felt five years ago. Startup goes from minutes to seconds; programs open immediately.
The cost is modest and the work is straightforward for anyone comfortable inside a laptop, or an hour in a workshop. The existing installation can be transferred so nothing is lost.
If your laptop still has a mechanical drive, do this before considering replacement. It rescues a great many machines.
More memory
Worth it if the machine runs short — visible in Task Manager as memory usage sitting near capacity.
8GB is a sensible minimum for ordinary use now; 16GB is comfortable. The upgrade is cheap where the memory is not soldered to the board, which is increasingly common in thinner machines. Check before buying.
A solid state drive and a memory upgrade together typically cost a fraction of a new laptop and address the causes of nearly every complaint about an older one.
When it is genuinely finished
It no longer receives security updates. The clearest reason. A machine running an operating system past its support date accumulates known, unpatched weaknesses. Windows 10 support has ended, which is covered in Windows 10 end of support.
The parts cannot be upgraded. Memory soldered to the board and a drive that cannot be replaced means there is nothing to improve.
Repair approaches half the replacement cost. A screen or a keyboard on a five-year-old machine often does.
The battery is finished and cannot be replaced practically. Depends on the machine.
It genuinely cannot do the job. Video editing, modern games, or software with requirements it does not meet.
If it will not run the current Windows
Many perfectly serviceable machines are excluded by hardware requirements. Options:
Install Linux. A mainstream desktop distribution runs well on older hardware, receives security updates, and handles browsing, email, documents and video without difficulty. For a machine used mainly for the web, this is a genuinely good outcome.
Repurpose it offline. A dedicated machine for a specific task with no internet access.
Recycle it responsibly, having removed and destroyed the drive or wiped it properly.
What to avoid is continuing to use an unsupported machine online for banking and email. That is the situation where an old laptop becomes an actual risk rather than an annoyance.
Before you do anything
Back up. Upgrades occasionally go wrong and old drives sometimes fail during the work — see backing up what you cannot replace.
And if you are replacing the machine, wipe the old drive properly before it leaves your house. Deleting files does not remove them.
